PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Project Example
While working with Nav Canada, I had to support all types of hardware and software. Compared to other Area Control Centers, Gander is larger due to Gander's requirement to provide navigation services to aircraft traveling across the Atlantic.
Since Gander is unique in this way, a billing system was built probably in the early 90's to handle Ocean billing. It required MS-DOS to run. I mentioned to the management team that the PC used is old, running Windows 95, If there is a hardware failure, it will be difficult to find parts for an X486.
I was asked to take a look and see if this could be run on a Windows 10 workstation.
The script would take a string of characters, which it would parse into individual fields. This format was required by the main billing system at the head office to process. Using an application called "DosBox" I was able to get the billing script to run, but I couldn't lower the processor speeds enough to prevent skipped records due to its design to run on a much slower PC.
The script would need to be rewritten, which I assumed would be a quick job. After several days with little success, I was completely lost. I would get a strange error that didn't tell me much, but it always mentioned the number 80. Eventually, it clicked. The old billing system was using an old green CRT monitor, and these monitors have a maximum of 80 chars per line. I made the adjustments and things seemed to be working great.
As a part of the testing process, we would run both the old system and the new system in parallel for a few weeks and compare the output. We noticed that the new script I had written would show approximately 8-10 more transactions than the old system. This was causing me some concern and I began doing some manual comparisons. It seemed that my script was correct. I had built-in error checking, but the old system did not.
To make a long story short, the old billings system was used for almost 20 years, averaging a loss of approx. $50,000 yearly bills.
